The Deputy Director General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Dr Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, has called for the scrapping of some programmes offered by some universities in preparing graduates for the job market.
According to him, such programmes do not add anything valuable to the studies of students in preparing them as entrepreneurs and for industries.
Dr Abdulai Jinapor made the call at the 18th congregation of the Koforidua Technical University (KTU).
He indicated that universities seeking re-accreditation for their programmes will have to demonstrate evidence of employability of graduates before they will be accredited.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Dr Abdulai Jinapor said there is a new wind of accreditation culture that must be imbibed by education players.
Referencing the 2020/2021 Auditor General’s report on the non-accredited programmes, Dr Jinapor indicated that going forward institutions seeking re-accreditation of their programmes must demonstrate evidence of employability of graduates of such programmes before such programmes will be accredited.
The Deputy GTEC Director, who revealed that procurement process are underway for the procurement of zones of pick-up vehicles for all 10 technical universities in the country, indicated that clearance has also been given to the Koforidua Technical University to mount post-graduate programmes to doctoral levels.
The theme for the matriculation was: ‘Effective Technical University – Industry Collaborations: Key to Manpower Development and Possible Job Creation in Ghana’.
Guest Speaker Ing. Dr Daniel Anobaah Ankrah, who is a consulting engineer, emphasized the role of technical universities .
He charged leadership to develop middle-level manpower in the context of national development through programmes offered for industry.
On his part, Vice Chancellor of the Koforidua Technical University Professor David Kofi Essumang indicated that the university is currently sponsoring 16 staff members to pursue PhD and MPhil programmes to boost its human resource development.
He also called on government and GETFund to assist the University complete some stalled projects.
A total of 1,692 graduands were presented to the Governing Council, board and faculty for the conferment of degrees and other awards at the 18th congregation of the Koforidua Technical University.
